A classic Ligurian pasta, it is among the most renowned and well-loved of the local pasta shapes . That Trenette are unique we can judge immediately just from their name. There are many possible interpretations as to its origins, the most common being that it derives from the  word, tria, from the Arabic itriyya, for pasta.

The classic dish Trenette con pesto, fagiolini e patate is an ode to all the best products that the region has to offer.  Warm Trenette, blanched green beans and slices of potatoes are all dressed with  the local garlicky pesto. It is  such an important symbol of the local food culture in that it represents the most deep rooted rituals and habits of the locals. This is due in part for the fact that it is considered one of the ‘cibi di magro’ – literally ‘lean foods’,  which represent all dishes that were eaten on days of religious importance when meat is prohibited and therefore represented a versatile dish to be enjoyed  by everyone.
